It concerns me that we automatically go to drugs as a treatment for Osteopenia, Osteoporosis or any other condition for that matter.  Personally, I have had a few very bad experiences with the side effects of drugs and I am now very cautious. The current drugs for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis have so many side effects, they are scary and I would advise you to be cautious.  There are other answers.  At this point, the drugs most commonly prescribed  for bone issues are Fosomax, Boniva and Actonel.

These drugs are classified as bisphosphonates which are actually an ingredient used for many years in fertilizers, soaps, laundry detergents and industrial lubricants – how can that be good for us!!!

Fosomax is the best selling drug of the three.  It is made by Merck and is that company’s second best selling drugs with sales topping four billion dollars.  Consumers Affairs reported that Merck set aside 48 million dollars for a defense fund against lawsuits related to the side effects which for many people are very serious.  Actonel is the second most successful drug in this category and coincidentally Proctor and Gamble, who makes Actonel, also makes laundry detergent and toothpaste.

Sometimes drugs are necessary, but why not look for some natural solutions first before we go down that road.  Diet and exercise definitely play a role in good strong bone health and how about supplimenting our diet with vitamins and minerals.  Let’s make an informed decision before taking a drug that will have long term consequences.
